The name "opal" comes from the Sanskrit word upala , meaning precious stone. Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica, it is classed as a mineraloid, unlike crystalline forms of silica, which are classed as minerals. 90% of the world's opals come from Australia, and the rest can be found in other parts of the world such as Mexico, Brazil, and Indonesia. Its said that the virgin Goddess of the Rainbow was turned into an opal by the Mother Goddess because she was being chased by suitors. Opal is known to enhances cosmic consciousness.
